Allenstown, New Hampshire is situated in Merrimack County. The town was granted in 1721, but it wasn't until July 2, 1831 that it was incorporated. Part of the village of Suncook is located in Allenstown. It is named in honor of Samuel Allen, who was the provincial governor of the Province of New Hampshire. The original townspeople settled in the eastern part of Allenstown, but after the American Civil War, given that the railroad did not go through the town proper, most of the residents had migrated to the western part of town, a part of town which is currently known as Suncook, near the banks of the Merrimack River as well as the Suncook River. The eastern part of town is where Bear Brook State Park now stands.
