The largest city in Nebraska, Omaha, is also the seat of Douglas County. Located on the banks of the Missouri River, it was founded by speculators from Council Bluffs, Iowa, who established a crossing and named it the Lone Tree Ferry. It was named Omaha, which phonetically approximates the Pawnee word for “dwellers on the bluff.”
