The state capital of Nebraska, Lincoln, is also the county seat of Lancaster County. It was established in 1856 as the seat of the newly established county. The naming of the city was done by political maneuvering by the city fathers of Omaha, who wanted to keep Omaha as the capital once the Nebraska Territory had been admitted as a state. They thought that naming it in honor of the late President would inflame the large number of Confederate sympathizers. The attempt was not successful.
