Settled in the 1820s and 1830s, Bellevue is the oldest continuous town in Nebraska, and the second oldest settlement in the state. Once the seat of government in Nebraska, the Sarpy County community was incorporated as a city in 1855. Bellevue is bounded on the east by the Missouri River, and on the west by the city of Gilmore.
