The Montana city of Missoula, situated on the banks of the Clark Fork and Bitterroot Rivers, is the county seat of Missoula County. At the time of its founding in 1860, it was called Hell Gate Trading Post. It was so named due to the entrance to the valley which was littered with human bones from ambushes. The settlement soon moved five miles upstream and at that time was named Missoula Mills. Eventually, that was shorted to its current name.
