Tupelo, the largest city and seat of Lee County, Mississippi, is most famous as the place where Elvis Presley was born. The first American settlers named the town Gum Pond, apparently a reference to the tupelo trees which grew there in abundance, some time before the War Between the States. The tupelo tree, known as blackgum trees, are the subject of the city’s Gumtree Arts Festival. After the War, the town was renamed Tupelo.
