Hattiesburg, Mississippi is the county seat of Forrest County, and is also in Lamar County. It was founded by a civil engineer and lumberman, William Hardy, who named it after his wife Hattie. Hardy had been a Captain in the Confederate Army and had also founded Laurel, Mississippi and co-founded Gulfport.
