The city of Greenville, Mississippi, the seat of Washington County, was founded in 1824 by William Blanton, who received a land grant for the plot that is now most of downtown Greenville. It was named in honor of General Nathanael Greene, a close friend of George Washington, and who was one of its founders. The entire town was destroyed during the siege of Vicksburg, after Union troops burned every single building. Veterans rebuilt the town near where it stood before the battle.
