Minnesota’s capital city, Saint Paul, is also the county seat of Ramsey County. It is located almost entirely on the eastern side of the Mississippi River and adjacent to Minneapolis, the other half of the Twin Cities. Early in its history, the settlement was known as “Pig’s Eye,” which was the nickname of a bootlegger and fur trader as well as the name of his pub. In 1841, a Catholic priest founded a church called Paul the Apostle and successfully pushed for a name change for the city.
