Minneapolis, Minnesota, is the county seat of Hennepin County and is situated on both banks of the Mississippi River near where it joins the Minnesota River. The name was suggested by the first school teacher in the fledgling city and is a combination of the Dakota word meaning water, “mni” and the Greek word for city, “polis.” The city is adjacent to the state capital, St. Paul, and the two cities are known collectively as the Twin Cities.
