Ely, Minnesota is in Saint Louis County in the Vermillion Iron Range on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It was first called Florence, but once it was discovered that there was already a town in the state by that name, it was changed to honor Samuel B. Ely, a miner from Michigan. Mr. Ely was never actually in the Ely area.
