The Michigan island resort area of Mackinac Island, situated in Lake Huron between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, was used by the British in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812. The island can only be reached by ferry, small plane, and snowmobile, and motorized vehicles are not allowed except for snowmobiles, emergency vehicles, and service vehicles. People travel on foot, bike, or horse-drawn carriage.
