Cambridge, Massachusetts is in Middlesex County and is in fact one of two county seats there. Home to two renowned universities, Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, it was named in honor of the University of Cambridge in England. Settled in 1631 by the the Puritan colonists of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the town, which was where Harvard Square is today, was called Newe Towne. Within a few years, the name had morphed into Newetowne, then in 1638, it was changed to Cambridge.
