Baltimore City, an independent city, was founded in 1729 and named in honor of Lord Baltimore, the first Proprietor and Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland. It was home to the Second Continental Congress from December of 1776 to February of 1777, and in the War of 1812 was the site of the Battle of Baltimore. It is where Fort McHenry was built and was the inspiration of Francis Scott Key’s writing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
