Portland, Maine, the county seat of Cumberland County. The first permanent settlement was in 1633 named Casco. In 1658, the Massachusetts Bay Colony took over Casco Bay and renamed it Falmouth. The city was destroyed several times, including during King Philip’s War, King William’s War, and the Revolutionary War. In 1786, the town was divided, and the former section of Falmouth called the Neck was named Portland, after an isle near Dorset, England. Portland, Oregon is named after this city.
