Bar Harbor, Maine, is a town on Mount Desert Island which is located in Hancock County in Down East Maine. It is a summer colony and resort town which was incorporated in 1796 as Eden. It was renamed Bar Harbor, a reference to the gravel and sand bar which forms the back of the harbor and which is visible at low tide.
