Named in honor of Philippe d’Orleans, Duke of Orleans, Regent of France, the city of New Orleans and is in Orleans Parish. A principal port in the United States and the home of the Mardi Gras, this city has a long, rich history, including the mass migration into it after the Haitian Revolution (1804), the battle during the War of 1812, and the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent failure of the Federal levee system in 2005.
