The county seat of Douglas County, Kansas, the city of Lawrence was founded by the New England Emigrant Aid Company, which was a transportation company created to transport immigrants to the Kansas Territory in order to shift the population so that Kansas would enter the United States as a free state instead of a slave state. It was named in honor of Amos Lawrence, who was responsible for much of the financial aid of the settlement.
