The capital of Iowa, Des Moines, is also the seat of Polk County. Additionally, part of the city is in Warren County. In 1843, Captain James Allen ordered construction of a fort at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. While the Captain wanted to name it Fort Raccoon, the federal government wanted to name it Fort Des Moines, and they won. It gets its name from Fort Des Moines, which in turn was named for the Des Moines River.
