Indianapolis, Indiana is the county seat of Marion County. It was created specifically to be the state capital in 1820, after Corydon was displaced in that position. The name was invented by a justice on the Indiana Supreme Court, Jeremiah Sullivan, who put the word Indiana and the Greek word for city, “polis” together. It was built and became the capital in January of1825.
