Evansville, Indiana is located in Vanderburgh County, where it functions as the seat of that county. It was settled in 1812 and is located on the bend of the Ohio River, therefore it is frequently referred to as “River City.” It was originally named McGary’s Landing, after the owner of the land on which the settlement was established. In 1814, he renamed it Evansville, after an officer in the War of 1812, Colonel Bob Evans.
