The county seat of Peoria County is the city of Peoria. It was settled in 1680 with the construction of Fort Crevecoeur, which soon burned to the ground and was replaced in 1813 by Fort Clark, which became the name of the settlement. In 1825, when the County of Peoria was put together, Fort Clark was officially named Peoria, which is one of the five tribes in the confederacy of Illinois.
