The largest city in Illinois, Chicago, is co-located in DuPage and Cook Counties and serves as the county seat of Cook County. Situated near a portage between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes, it was incorporated in 1837. The city’s name comes from the Indian word “shikaakwa,” which means “wild garlic” a plant which were found in the area. It is nicknamed the “Windy City,” though the reason for that nickname are not clear.
