Athens, Georgia, the county seat of Clarke County, is actually a consolidated city-county called Athens-Clarke County. In 1991, the original city gave up its charter in order to unify with Clarke County. In 1801, the University of Georgia approved the city of Athens as the site of the university. They named the town in which their school was to be situated in honor of the academy of Plato and Aristotle in ancient Greece.
