The county seat of St. Johns County, the city of St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest continuously occupied city and port in the continental United States. Because it was first sighted on the Catholic feast day of St. Augustine of Hippo in 1565, Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles named the territory San Agustin.
