The county seat of Bay County, Florida is Panama City. It is situated on the Florida Panhandle and was originally named Harrison. The name was changed during the building of the Panama Canal in Central America, due to the fact that the Florida city is in a direct line from Chicago to Panama City, Panama. The name change was done by the developer of the town, George Mortimer West, in order to take advantage of the media hype about the canal.
