Naples, Florida is the seat of Collier County, though the courthouse is situated in East Naples, which is the unincorporated area just east of the city. It was founded by a former Confederate general who was later a United States Senator, John Stuart Williams and his business partner Walter Haldeman in the late 1880s. It gets its name from one of the promotion pieces which sold the area to real estate speculators. That piece said that the bay was one “surpassing the bay in Naples, Italy.”
