The county seat of Miami-Dade County is Miami, Florida. Although it had been inhabited for centuries, the Spanish claimed possession in 1566, and shortly thereafter, they built a Spanish mission there. In 1836, Fort Dallas was erected there, and the Second Seminole War was the cause of battles there. It was named for the Miami River, which was named in honor of the Mayaimi Indians who inhabited the area.
