The largest city in Florida, Jacksonville, is the county seat of Duval County. It is also the state with the largest area in all of the contiguous United States. It was first explored by Europeans in 1562 by French Huguenot explorer Jean Ribault, and two years later erected Fort Caroline, which was later renamed Fort San Mateo by the Spanish who took the territory from the French. Eventually, it was named in honor of Andrew Jackson.
