The city of Westport, Connecticut, is found on Long Island Sound and is port of Fairfield County. In 1693, a group of five farming families arrived in the area after following cattle to the place known by the Pequot Indians as Machamux, which means “beautiful land.” In 1693, it was called Bankside, and in 1732 was renamed Green’s Farm. In 1835, it was incorporated as the Town of Westport.
