The city of Bridgeport, Connecticut, is situated in Fairfield County. It is the largest city in the state. The first European settlers arrived between 1639 and 1665, and the settlement was called Pequonnock. In 1701, it was renamed Stratfield, probably because it was between the towns of Fairfield and Stratford. Some time before 1777, it was renamed Newfield, and in 1821, the township of Bridgeport was incorporated.
