The county seat of Pueblo County, Colorado is its largest city, Pueblo. Founded by a group of trappers and traders who helped build Fort Pueblo near the border of Mexico, it was home to about ten families. Christmas or Christmas Eve of 1854, the fort was beset upon by a war party of Apaches and Utes, who killed between fifteen and nineteen men and captured one woman and two children. The survivors abandoned the fort afterwards, and it was dormant until the Colorado Gold Rush in 1859.
