Situated in the Northern Joaquin Valley, Stockton is the seat of Jan Joaquin Valley, in Northern California, and the state's thirteenth most populous city. After the Miwok and Yokut Indian tribes, the area was first settled by Captain Charles Maria Weber, who came to the area to mine gold, but instead acquired the Rancho Campo de los Franceses land grand, and founded Stockton in 1849.
