The California coastal city of Santa Monica in western Los Angeles County is a resort town and is populated by an eclectic population, including surfers, Hollywood stars and executives, upper middle class families, and students. The last of the amusement piers, Pacific Ocean Park, opened in 1958. When it was first built, it did more business than nearby competitor Disneyland, but inexplicably fell out of favor until it was foreclosed upon for back taxes in 1967. It was finally removed in 1974.
