The seat of Orange County, California Santa Ana was founded in 1869, adjacent to the Santa Ana River. After the 1769 expedition of Gaspar de Portolá, the area was named Vallejo de Santa Ana. In 1810, it was part of a land grant given to Jose Antonio Yorba, who called it Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana and, following the Mexican-American War, Alta, California, which included Santa Ana, became part of the United States, and American settlers came to Santa Ana.
