San Diego, California, which is situated on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, is the largest city and county seat of San Diego County. It has shares a partial border with Mexico. The explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo claimed the bay for Spain, naming it San Miguel in 1542. In 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino was sent out to map the coast. His flagship, San Diego, arrived in November of that year and named the area after San Diego de Alcala.
