San Bernardino, California is the seat of San Bernardino County, situated in an area known as the Inland Empire, in the eastern part of the San Bernardino Valley. The city is one of the oldest communities in California, although, in its current location, San Bernardino was not widely settled until 1851, after California became a state. Today, San Bernardino is the poorest city of its size in California, and the second poorest in the United States, after Detroit.
