The west coast port city of Oakland, California is located in the East Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is the county seat of Alameda. It was the main staging area for passengers and cargo during the California Gold Rush and was the western terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad. But the largest growth of the city was in the first third of the 20th century, largely due to the exodus of residents of neighboring San Francisco during the 1906 earthquake.
