Little Rock is the largest city in Arkansas, and the state capital. The city is situated in the geographic center of the state, and named for a rock formation on the south bank of the Arkansas River. Fourche Creek and Rock Creek run through the city, flowing into the river, and the western part of the city is in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. North Little Rock, across the river from Little Rock, was once a part of the city but it became an independent city in 1904.
