Phoenix, the county seat of Maricopa and the capital of Arizona, was first settled by a Confederate veteran who built a series of canals which mimicked those which the Native Americans had built long before. It was named it Pumpkinville because of the many pumpkins which grew along the canals. The name was later changed to Swilling’s Mill, then renamed to Helling Mill, Mill City, East Phoenix. It is now Phoenix ever since, named as it was born from the ruins of the former civilization.
