Mesa, in Maricopa County, is the third-largest city in Arizona, after Phoenix and Tucson. Mesa is bounded by Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. The area has been populated for at least two thousand years, going back to the arrival of the Hohokam people, who constructed its original canal system. The region was opened for settlement by European Americans by the late 1800s.
