The city of Chandler, in Maricopa County, Arizona, is bounded by Tempe to the north and west, by Mesa to the north, Phoenix to the west, Gilbert to the east, and the Gila River Indian Community to the south. The city is named for Dr. Alexander John Chandler, the first veterinary surgeon in Arizona Territory. Dr. Chandler purchased eighteen thousand acres and organized the Chandler Ranch, which developed into a town, and then a city.
