Known as New Archangel when it was under Russian rule, the city and borough of Sitka, Alaska is on Baranof Island, and the southern half of Chichagof Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean. The area was first settled by the Tlingit people more than 10,000 years ago, and the Russians settled Old Sitka in 1799, while it became part of the United States with the Alaska in 1867 with the Alaska Purchase.
