Also known as Utqiaġvik or Ukpiaġvik, Barrow is located above the Arctic Circle, in the North Slope Borough of Alaska. It is the northernmost city in the United States, and the tenth northernmost city in the world. Barrow is surrounded by the Alaskan National Petroleium Reserve. The land upon which Barrow sits is mostly tundra, and the climate is cold and dry, known as a polar climate. Winters in Barrow can be dangerously cold, while summers are cool even during the warmest period.
