Selma is the seat of Dallas County, located along the Alabama River in lower western Alabama. Best known today as the site of the 1965 Selma Voting Rights Movement and the Civil Rights march from Selma to Montgomery, the region was inhabited for thousands of years by a variety of indigenous people. When French explorers and colonists first came to the area, it was inhabited by the Muscogee, who had been there for centuries. Selma was settled by the French in 1732, and incorporated in 1820.
