Toronto is the capital of the province of Ontario and is also Canada’s largest city. It is situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. The original settlement was named the Town of York and was the capital of Upper Canada early in its history. It was pillaged in the Battle of York, during the War of 1812 and was renamed Toronto in 1834.
