The coastal seaport city of Vancouver, in British Columbia, was originally a settlement named Gastown. As it grew, it became the townsite of Granville, and was incorporated as the city of Vancouver in 1886. After the transcontinental railroad was built to go to the city, it became an important link in the trace route between eastern Canada, London, and the Orient.
