Located on the island of Ireland, Northern Ireland is part of the UK. It was, for decades, a place of violence and war between the nationalists, who wanted Northern Ireland to be reunited with Ireland, were Roman Catholic and the unionists, who wanted to keep Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom, were Protestant. The so-called Good Friday Agreement of 1998 was the end of the fighting. Belfast is the largest and capital city, and the official languages are English, Irish, and Ulster Scots.
