The military action known as the Iraq War began in 2003 when a coalition led by the United States invaded Iraq. The mission, which was to ferret out weapons of mass destruction, was never met, and there apparently were no WMD, contrary to what the U.S. and U.K. believed. President Saddam Hussein was captured in December 2003 and executed, tried in 2006, and executed on December 30, 2006. On August 31, 2010, the Americans, the final combat troops still in Iraq, declared victory and left.
