The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, sometimes called the World Series Earthquake, hit the San Francisco Bay Area. At least63 people were killed in the quake, more than 3,700 were injured, and between 5,000 and 12,000 people were left homeless.Centered in Santa Cruz County in the Santa Cruz Mountains, it was the first major earthquake to be recorded live on television, because the first game of the World Series was being covered at the moment of the first jolt.
